Clinical and audiologic characteristics of patients with sensorineural tinnitus and its association with psychological aspects:

We comment on three areas related to tinnitus. She develops tinnitus 3 weeks after starting citalopram 40 mg daily and psychotherapy sessions, which resolved completely when citalopram discontinued. It is currently not completely understood why some people feel distressed by their tinnitus, while others don’t. Every time I checked, there it was, shrieking back at me. High psychoasthenia scores were associated with hearing loss. Our study subjects showed a slight male predominance. Psychiatric conditions are common with tinnitus patients, and studies indicate that 48-60 percent of tinnitus afflicted individuals show signs of major depression.
Clinical and audiologic characteristics of patients with sensorineural tinnitus and its association with psychological aspects:

Mean scores indicate the presence of no or minimal depressive symptoms. Hearing impairments were of the low-frequency sensorineural type in 18.2 % of patients and were limited to the high frequencies in 77.9 % of patients. These specific neural circuits are embedded in a greater neural network, with the parahippocampal region functioning as a crucial linkage between both tinnitus related pathways. In total, 45.8 % of patients with high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss had high-pitched tinnitus. There were significant correlations between tinnitus severity, loudness and annoyance. You see, the failure of the limbic system to repress unwanted noise and sensations is only one job that this part of the brain is responsible for. Sensorineural tinnitus was related with hearing loss in some frequencies nevertheless of patients’ own awareness of hearing loss.

Fifty-six patients were observed for more than 6 months.
